In Cross River State, WCS has provided support to strengthen the protection and management of Cross River National Park, Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Mbe Mountains Community Forest. In Bauchi State, WCS collaborates with the state government to provide technical expertise for the effective conservation and management of Yankari Game Reserve.

The WCS Nigeria Program is seeking a Biomonitoring Officer for its Yankari landscape in Bauchi State. The position will provide support in implementing biodiversity monitoring systems across priority species and habitats.
Job Summary
The Biomonitoring Officer will support the Biomonitoring Coordinator in implementing biodiversity monitoring systems across priority species and habitats. The role involves conducting field surveys, managing ecological data, and contributing to reporting and stakeholder engagement. The officer will also assist in building local capacity for monitoring and ensuring high-quality data collection to inform conservation management. The position reports to the Biomonitoring Coordinator.

Duration: 13 months (renewable depending on availability of funds)

Responsibilities
Biodiversity Monitoring
- Support implementation of monitoring systems for priority species (e.g., elephants and primates) and habitats.
- Conduct field surveys including transects, camera trapping, and support data management of patrol-based monitoring.
- Assist in data collection and contribute to wildlife population and habitat assessments.
Research, Data Management & Analysis
- Collect ecological data using SMART and other field survey tools.
- Ensure accurate data entry, validation, and submission to central databases.
- Maintain monitoring records and datasets, supporting integration with GIS systems.
Reporting & Documentation
- Contribute to preparation of monitoring reports, field updates, and data summaries.
- Document field observations, threats (e.g., poaching, encroachment), and emerging trends.
- Support data compilation for donor and partner reporting.
Field Operations & Capacity Support
- Assist in training rangers and community members on basic monitoring techniques.
- Support the planning and implementation of routine patrols and monitoring activities.
- Support the coordination of field monitoring operations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife management, environmental science, or a related field (a master’s degree is an added advantage).
- 2–3 years’ experience in biodiversity monitoring or conservation fieldwork.
- Practical experience with field survey methods (transects, camera traps, GPS).
- Familiarity with SMART or similar monitoring systems (desirable).
- Experience working in protected areas or rural field settings (preferred).
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of ecological monitoring and field data collection methods.
- Attention to detail in data recording and reporting.
- Good report writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in remote and physically demanding environments.
- Team-orientated, with the ability to collaborate with rangers and technical staff.
- Basic data management and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new monitoring tools and technologies.
Additional Requirements
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Experience working in remote areas and in local contexts.
- Willingness and ability to undertake regular field travel within Nigeria.
- Demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation.
