Objectives

Contribute to the implementation of the operational communication strategy at field level in accordance with MSF WaCA standards and provide support for the translation of MSF WaCA operational communication content.

Main responsibilities

Translation and operational communication support

Specific Responsibilities

1- Communication

a) Operational content production support

  • Support for the production of communication tools and products (leaflets, brochures, posters, radio spots, articles, photos, videos) in line with the defined strategy and budget. In particular, he/she will help identify the right communication tools and adapt/translate communication material for target audiences.
  • Support for data collection and communication reporting, as required.
  • b) Internal communications
  • Support for the drafting of the operational newsletter within MSF WaCA (All staff, board);
  • Support for the development and implementation of communication tools for MSF WaCA teams at headquarters and in the field;
  • Organization and networking of the operational communication SharePoint.
  • c) Media management
  • Under the supervision of the Operational Communications Manager, he/she will be responsible for establishing and updating media mapping at headquarters and mission level (in collaboration with other sections);
  • He/she will be responsible for maintaining regular relations with key media contacts at HQ level (journalists, bloggers, photographers and cameramen) and will proactively contact them for visibility of operations;
  • He/she participates in the organization of operational communication events;
  • Collaborate with the movement’s internal communication platforms to disseminate MSF WaCA operational content.

d) Media alert

  • He/she monitors the media at headquarters level and reports articles, trends, news or reports that are important for MSF or for the context;

2- Translation

He/she will support the translation and writing of operational communication content in English.

Job requirements

Education

Essential:

Diploma in journalism, communications or related university degree; commercial translator diploma or practical translation certificate.

Professional experience required

  • at least two years’ professional experience in communications, journalism or public relations in the country. NGO experience would be a plus.
  • Previous professional experience in media relations in the country.
  • knowledge of traditional media and good understanding of social media.
  • knowledge of methods for accurate translation of high-level content.
  • knowledge of content creation software.

Languages Skills

  • Working proficiency in English and French

Computer Skills

  • MS Office suite (mainly MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
