Context and purpose

Feedback Madagascar (FBM) has been working since 1995, and in partnership with the local Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Ny Tanintsika (NT) since 2002, to reduce poverty and promote sustainable natural resource management in Madagascar. FBM/NT have developed a Tactical Plan for the 5-year period from 2019 to 2023, setting out objectives, expected results and key indicators. One key component of FBM/NT’s work is rainforest /biodiversity conservation, including a new project focusing on protecting lemurs. Communication of results of this work to different stakeholders (local communities, wider Malagasy population, international population and partners) is essential. For this reason, FBM/NT is looking for a volunteer to assist with our conservation work, focusing on communications and building capacity within its Madagascar team.

Placement location: Split between the rural area of Ambohimahamasina (Ambalavao district) and the Fianarantsoa Office, Madagascar.

Tasks

Principal:

  • Development of the on-going exhibition of lemur/forest monitoring findings at the Ambohimahamasina Youth Centre in collaboration with local stakeholders (youth, forest management groups, local team).
  • Assistance to the development of audio-visual tools to communicate information.
  • Capacity-building of the Madagascar team in communications, particularly social media to communicate findings of the lemur/forest monitoring initiatives.

Secondary:

  • Support to the continual updating and improvement of the FBM and NT websites and social media.
  • Teaching English to the Malagasy team of FBM/NT.
  • Support to the development of project proposals and partnership development .

Required skills

  • Design and poster development.
  • Experience in communications and social media.
  • Capacity in French and willingness to learn Malagasy.
  • Independence, punctuality, organisation and attention to detail.
  • Experience in data collection and processing via smartphone technology would be an advantage.

Minimum length of stay: 6 months

Note: This is an unpaid volunteer position. Furnished accommodation is available near to the Fianarantsoa office at a cost of 200,000 Ariary per month including electricity & water bills. Very basic accommodation is available in Ambohimahamasina. Assistance can be provided regarding organising visas and travel.
