The African Agricultural Technology Foundation is coordinating a multiple-partner collaboration to develop genetically improved African rice varieties with enhanced agronomic traits, specifically nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE), water use efficiency (WUE) and salt tolerance (ST) in NEWEST Rice Project. The goal of the NEWEST Rice project is to secure environmental release for NUE and NEWSET trait, introgression of traits into farmer preferred varieties and release at least one NUE variety in at least one project country. The Project will develop and implement stewardship plan, build capacity of at least four seed companies and 500 farmers on handling and utilization of NEWEST transgenic rice seed and produce at least 60 tons of transgenic NUE rice for the benefit of small holder farmers through private seed companies by 2024. Collaborating to achieve this goal are African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), Arcadia Biosciences, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda. Financial support is coming from the USAID’s ‘Feed the Future’ initiative

To facilitate commercialisation of the project and ensure that the products coming from the project are demand driven and market preferred, AATF is seeking a consultant to carry out a Market study to map out the market potential and ensure that better products are developed to fit into the needs of the consumers.

Specifically, the Terms of References for this assignment are:

  1. Assess data and information on rice value chain with respect to value chain players, production, marketing, distribution and utilisation in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda
  2. Develop profiles for the available varieties with details of prices, market value, key biotic and abiotic stresses, market segments etc.
  3. Prioririze the main biotic and abiotic stresses and the different interventions in place for each stress.
  4. Identify key rice attributes that farmers and stakeholders are looking for which can assist in developing better varieties through NEWEST Rice
  5. Map out target market segments for commercialisation of NEWEST rice in the respective countries
  6. Identifying possible market and product specific entry barriers and opportunities
  7. Compile and submit the market study report to AATF management within 4 months of commencement of the assignment

Specific tools of the study will be developed in close consultation with the NEWEST Rice project team to ensure detailed coverage of all objectives. Relevant literature will also be provided to the consultant for secondary data

EXPECTED OUTPUTS

A study inception report and tools to be submitted and approved within one month after awarding the consultancy

  1. A market report to be submitted as stipulated in the contract. The report must incorporate all terms of references covered in detail
  2. The data collection tools used, raw data and analyzed data in soft copy including database tables as collected and captured in electronic format using an agreed upon database management software.

Final reports will be scanned for plagiarism when submitted.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. The consultant(s) should possess minimum Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or any other related field.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of seed systems, agricultural markets and value chains in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda.
  3. Experience in working in rice value chain is added advantage
  4. Extensive experience in carrying out agricultural market surveys.
  5. Experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection analysis using statistical software.
  6. High degree of independence, flexibility and ability to meet strict deadlines.
