Position Overview:

Partners In Health seeks a qualified, dynamic candidate for the position of Director of Nursing for our West Africa clinical program. The Nursing Director will play a central role in the implementation PIH’s core mission and values, program development, clinical programs management, implementation, and strategic planning. The Director of Nursing will work in close collaboration with the PIH Liberia Director of Clinical Services, PIHL Community Program Director, PIHL Director of Policy and Partnership to ensure sustainable execution of priorities in accordance with national Ministry of Health guidelines. We are seeking an individual experienced in strategy, quality improvement, program development, budget/grant management, and clinical leadership, who can provide key assessments, and vision related to the PIH Liberia clinical program.

Position summary:

This person will be based in Maryland County, Liberia with some travel to the Ministry of Health and Board of Nursing and Midwifery in Monrovia to accompany in strategic planning and implementation of national nursing and midwifery policies and guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Nursing/Midwifery Director of PIH Liberia;
  • Hold day-to-day decision-making authority on nursing strategy and operational issues within the PIH Liberia. Nursing Vision, strategies and Programs;
  • Provide technical expertise in the areas of program development, management, training, implementation, and evaluation for clinical improvement projects;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Services, Senior leadership, and clinical staff to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate Nursing/Midwifery program activities and strategies;
  • Ensure all clinical activities within PIH supported facilities are consistent with established best evidenced based practices, international and national standards;
  • Support the development of the PIHL Nursing Evidence based Unit and Evidence based competencies of TU graduates;
  • Continue and Improve PIHL supports to TU;
  • Support the development of program management, development, implementation, and evaluation skill sets of fellow field clinical staff;
  • Collaborate with PIHL community health Director and National and County Community Focal Persons for successful implementation and integration of MOH community program and strategies;
  • Collaborate with the HR and medical education department for credentialed nursing specialty programs and professional development programs;
  • Ensure that all Nursing grants are aligned with PIHL strategic plan and MOH vision;
  • Ensure health programs utilize standardized protocols, policies, and guidelines according to the Ministry of Health and other applicable institutions;
  • Provide key programmatic insights and expertise in priority clinical areas.
  • Support National efforts for standardization of Nursing and Midwifery principles and practices
  • Provide technical input during development of proposals and technical reviews.
  • Create and manage project related budgets.
  • Coordinate closely with other departments in Boston, including finance, communications, development, nursing, advocacy, international operations, and training as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with a Master’s degree in Clinical Leadership, Public Health or related clinical area required.
  • Extensive experience in public health, public administration, health care management, or international development required.

Experience and Expertise

Preferred:

  • At least 5 years of experience developing, managing, implementing, and evaluating clinical improvement projects in low-resource settings.
  • At least 2 years of supervision and management experience of staff required.
  • Candidate must have at least 2-3 years of clinical bedside practice within an accredited health care institution.

Technical Competencies:

  • Documented experience in Evidence based nursing and midwifery practice (Research, QI and grant writing)
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, especially the ability to plan, organize, and follow through with a variety of constituencies, handle multiple assignments, prioritize work flow, adapt to fluctuating workload, and meet deadlines.

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Ability to live in West Africa full-time required.
  • Ability to collaborate professionally with culturally diverse colleagues and constituencies.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as work cooperatively with a diverse team.
  • A commitment to social justice.
