Proposal Summary:
MSI is pursuing the anticipated Supporting Peace and Stability in South Kivu (SPSSK) Activity. Working in close coordination with USAID/DRC, the activity aims to support peace and stability in South Kivu following the withdrawal of MONUSCO (the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo) peacekeeping troops.
Objectives:
- Identify root causes of conflicts and violence, improve social cohesion, restore inclusive dialogs and strengthen local conflict management and mitigation structures to address disputes peacefully and ensure solutions are identified and implemented by local community actors.
- Develop economic alternatives to illegal activities and reinforce community resilience to armed group recruitment.
- Strengthen local governance structures to take on MONUSCO’s responsibilities and build trust between communities and local government stakeholders.
Position Summary:
MSI is seeking an Economic Livelihoods Advisor to design and lead programming to increase and promote sustainable livelihoods as alternatives to illegal activities and foster economic security for local communities in South Kivu. This will be a full-time position based in Bukavu, DRC. This position is contingent upon award.

Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic vision, management and technical direction of program activities related to economic livelihood interventions across multiple sectors, such as agriculture and artisanal mining.
- Build relationships with the private sector, relevant government ministries, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Lead the development of aspects of the work plan related to economic livelihood interventions, including but not limited to 1) income-generation activities for women vulnerable to gender-based violence; 2) support to cooperatives, savings, microfinance, and lending programs and; 3) assistance to enterprises and cooperatives on improving productivity and efficiency and strengthening market linkages.
- Incorporate data from foundational assessments to inform programming.
- Collaborate with the operations, monitoring & evaluation, and grants teams to implement, monitor, and closeout activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in international development, economics, finance or other relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated expertise in developing and/or managing donor-funded economic livelihoods programs or components.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with local government counterparts, civil society organizations, and local cooperatives.
- Task and detail-oriented, with the ability to work independently and within a team to meet deadlines.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout South Kivu, as needed.
- Prior experience in the region and development programming in DRC and South Kivu preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, supervision, and written/oral communication skills.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and French required.
