This assignment will focus on training 200 project participants (grouped into eight groups) on identification of viable business opportunities, planning and managing the enterprises for sustainable income. The training will be undertaken in Kakuma, Turkana West Sub-County, Turkana County. The duration of the of the training will be 5-10 days. Some of the topics to be covered during the training are introduction to entrepreneurship, selection of enterprises, business records and record keeping, marketing, enterprise /business planning, use of digital resources in the enterprises, enterprise financial planning and management, among others.

It is under this background that NRC requires the services of a consultant to undertake technical capacity building on entrepreneurship skills to enhance the project participants’ capacity to effectively manage their enterprises sustainably for income and food security.

  1. The objectives of the training

The general objective of the training is to improve the knowledge, skills and capacity of the project participants in the management of their enterprises to ensure sustainable income and food security.

Specific objectives

By the end of the training workshop, the project participants are expected to:

  1. To define or redefine their enterprise objectives and work for the realization of the same
  2. Develop a basic business plan for the enterprise
  3. Understand and be able to keep the various types of business records
  4. Know how to use basic digital resources in their enterprises
  5. Be able to do buying, costing and pricing for commodities
  6. Undertake basic financial planning and management strategy for the enterprise
  7. Explain risks for the enterprise and how to manage them
  8. Manage customers and competition

Scope of Work

Deliverables

The following are the expected deliverables from the consultant

  1. A training plan on how the consultant will carry out the assignment. This will be submitted to NRC for review and approval
  2. Materials, handouts, PowerPoint slides, group exercises required for the training prior to the training. NRC will support with the printing of the materials.
  3. In-person training of 200 participants using participatory adult learning approaches suitable for semi-illiterate and illiterate participants
  4. A comprehensive training report

Methodology

The training will be participatory, use multiple delivery and adult learning approaches that focus on semi-illiterate and illiterate participants. The consultant will develop a detailed training plan and methodology based on their understanding of the terms of reference. The training period is five to 10 days. The final training content, methodology and approaches shall be agreed upon between the consultant and the NRC. There will be pre-test and post-test for this training.

The consultant will undertake the following key tasks:

  1. Analyse relevant project documents, socio-economic and market assessment reports
  2. Present an inception training plan that has topics and objectives for each topic, learning materials / aids needed, and learning activities
  3. Develop training programme / schedule
  4. Deliver the trainings using participatory approaches
  5. Prepare draft training report and submit to NRC for review
  6. Submit final training report

The consultant will be responsible for:

  • Developing the training plan
  • Developing training materials and tools;
  • Conducting the training
  • Providing all the required training materials before the training
  • Submitting the training report and training materials
  1. Contract and Logistics
  • The consultant will sign a contract including terms and conditions of the consultancy and payment modalities.
  • The consultant’s travel costs (to and from locations)
  • The consultant will abide by NRC’s rules and regulations
  • The consultant will be offered office space during the period of the training at NRC Area Office, Kakuma
  1. Qualifications and Experience

To qualify for this assignment, the consultant (trainer):

  • A Bachelor’s degree in enterprise development, business management, agribusiness management or relevant related disciples
  • Over 3 years of working experience in delivering enterprise management training for rural households, with a strong focus on semi-illiterate and illiterate individuals
  • Experience working in refugee and host community settings
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitation skills and use of participatory, adult learning approaches.
  • Must have conducted similar training for other INGOs or NGOs
  • Have presentation skills and good report writing skills
  • Fluent in Kiswahili and English languages, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to undertake the assignment in Kakuma, Turkana County, Kenya t
  • Be a Kenyan individual or company
