Overview of position:

  • Whereas the ongoing insurgency in Borno State is widely reported as the main driver of displacement, Nigeria also faces deepening vulnerabilities as a result of hydro-meteorological hazards, mainly flooding and drought. Based on our cleints Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), as of July 2025, there are over 2,292,477 IDPs and 2,189,318 returnees across the states in Northeast Nigeria, such as Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Taraba, and Bauchi. Borno State is resident to the highest number of IDPs i.e., 1,749,662. The limited presence of implementing partners has significantly weakened service delivery across critical sectors, leaving gaps in water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), health, and shelter support for displacement-affected populations. WASH service delivery remains inadequate due to persistent funding constraints, leaving communities underserved and at heightened risk of preventable diseases.
  • Our client activities in WASH response have been tailored to address the vulnerabilities of people affected by conflict in Borno and Yobe States. In Borno State, the response will specifically focus on conflict-affected LGAs of Dikwa, Gubio, Jere, Kaga, Kalabalge, Konduga, Mafa, Magumeri, MMC, Mobbar, Monguno, and Ngala, while in Yobe, the focus will be Damaturu, Gujba, Gulani, and Tarmuwa LGAs.
  • Working under the overall supervision of the Program Manager – CCCM, Shelter, NFI & WASH, and the direct supervision of the Project Assistant – Community Engagement and Risk Communication, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting in the planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of Community Engagement and Risk Communication activities.

Role objectives:

  • Facilitate community engagement throughout the WASH project implementation period at field level. Engage different community members – including women, girls, boys and men before, during and after WASH activities undertaking.
  • Manage, supervise and coordinate community volunteers – e.g. WASHCOMs and WASH maintenance teams in WASH Unit operating camps or camps like settings or host communities.
  • Responsible for coordinating hygiene promotion activities, collecting and analysing data coming from community volunteers. Serves as links between these committees, LGA counterparts (like NEMA/SEMA, Water board) and community volunteers.
  • Support and mentor WASH Committees, WASH and Site maintenance team in planning and carrying out hygiene promotion on improving IDPs and communities’ risky WASH related behaviours, ensure appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities.
  • Support the implementation of an effective referral mechanism in all IDP sites covered by the WASH field staff and SEMA/NEMA camp mangers.
  • Support and mentor WASH Committees and WASH maintenance team in planning and carrying out cholera preparedness and response initiatives in the camps and cholera hotspots.
  • Support implementation of Communication with communities on WASH related activities.
  • Hold regular meetings with WASH Committees and WASH maintenance team to discuss identified key risk practices and support the team of WASH Committees to plan and carry out appropriate community mobilization activities to promote safe practices.
  • Support in the gathering of baseline data, profile of beneficiaries, and WaSH needs of the affected community. Information collected must be reliable/trustworthy and accurate.
  • Synergize and attend coordination meeting’s, act as link between WASH, Shelter, DTM, PSS and the affected population at camp/community level.
  • Assess the needs and resources of IDPs in terms of basic WASH needs with participation.
  • Notify challenges and changes during project implementation ahead of time.
  • Submit daily, weekly and monthly reports on time using standard format.
  • Any other task not listed above when requested by the supervisors.

Project reporting:

  • This role will work under the supervision of project Officer and Senior Project Assistant.

Key competencies:

  • Certificate / Diploma / Degree level education in social sciences, statistics / business / economics / or any relevant field with excellent knowledge of field operations and community engagement.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in similar capacity, preferably within the CCCM, Shelter, NFI or WASH humanitarian or development fields.
  • Excellent knowledge of working with Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Word, Powerpoint.
  • Knowledge of working with mobile data collection apps such as Kobo and ODK.
  • Minimum knowledge of humanitarian shelter/NFI programming is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of participatory methods and community engagement approaches.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately, and pay attention to details.
  • An understanding of data confidentiality issues.
  • Ability to multitask, excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Willingness to assist efficiently in a very busy environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Ability to stay in high risk areas for prolonged duration with remote management from supervisors.
  • Ability to present clear and concise information and good written and verbal communication skills.
