The NGO supports public and non-profit hospitals, local districts, schools of nursing and midwifery, university faculties of medicine.

CUAMM’s action focuses on health system strengthening and targets the weakest population groups, particularly women and children. Interventions include prevention, screening and treatment programmes; development or strengthening of referral systems at community level; training of health staff; management support and technical assistance to local health institutions; field research.

CUAMM’s international and national staff work together on the front line to strengthen local health systems, in resource-limited contexts where the commitment and contribution of the individual can make a real difference.

Job position: Gynaecologist

Location:

 Chiulo Hospital, Cunene Province, Angola

Duration: 12 months

Family duty station: YES

Purpose of the role

As part of a project to support Chiulo rural hospital, the gynaecologist will contribute to the improvement of the quality of care offered by the hospital, by enhancing gynecological and obstetric services, guaranteeing the prompt management of emergencies and training health staff.

Key duties:

  • Providing technical assistance in the gynecologic-obstetric field, through direct clinical provision – when necessary – and supervision of local staff
  • Collaborating with other doctors in order to ensure the smooth running of the hospital in all its components, from the active on-call and on-call service
  • Organizing monthly hospital-based maternal death assessment and audit meetings
  • Training and supervision of health staff in applying national and international guidelines and standards, collaborating in daily on-the-job training and in the continuous training program.

  • Improve the organization of obstetric and gynecological services, ensuring staff coordination and the correct use of materials and equipment.
  • Mentor Italian residents taking part in the JPO (Junior Project Officer) initiative

Requirements

  • University Degree in Medicine and Specialisation in Gynaecology and Obstetrics
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written Portuguese; good knowledge of Italian will be an asset
  • At least 3 years of professional clinical experience as a specialist at hospital level
  • Previous experience in fragile or low income countries
  • Ability of adapting skills and competencies to contexts with limited resources and capacity to effectively cooperate with national and international staff.
  • Adaptability to work and live in rural area

Other information

TERMS OF CONTRACT

Type of contract: collaboration contract

Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the job position, with possible increase based on professional experience and rural area hardship allowance)

Rest days: 2.5 days for each month of work

Flight ticket: one return flight

Health issues: the NGO provides health insurance and covers vaccination costs

Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa and work/residence permits

Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it is generally individual, depending on the logistical situation and the availability of accommodation in the workplace

Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker

Family policy: where the socio-political context and logistics allow it, international staff may be accompanied by their partner or family. In this case, the NGO provides a salary supplement and guarantees flights, health insurance, visas and permits for dependents and accompanying family members.
