Introduction

ANPPCANSOM with the support of SHF and Somaliland Ministry of Health Development is implementing a live saving nutrition projects aimed to provide integrated management and prevention of acute malnutrition in Hargeisa, Berbera, Gabiley and Zeila districts-Somaliland.

As part of improving the quality of nutrition services provided to the beneficiaries, ANPPCANSOM is planning to provide Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) training to nutrition staff in 22 health facilities and 2 stabilization centers funded by SHF. The training will enable the nutrition staff to acquire counseling and communication skills necessary for optimal infant and young child feeding practices.

Overall Goal

The training overall goal is to contribute to improvement of the nutritional status, growth, development and survival of infants and young children through promotion and support for optimal IYCF and care practices.

Specific Objectives

1. To train health staff on IYCF counseling and support for caretakers;

  1. To enable nutrition staff demonstrates appropriate use of IYCF counseling skills;
  2. To provide capacity building to nutrition staff on WHO/UNICEF recommended feeding practices for Infants and Young Children from age 0 to 2 years in order to reduce the risks associated with inappropriate feeding practice;
  3. To identify ways to prevent /resolve common breastfeeding difficulties;
  4. To describe how to feed children in difficult circumstances;
  5. To enable participants understand the importance of family and community support in improving feeding practices;
  6. To explain nutrition staff on how exclusive breastfeeding prevents common childhood illnesses and malnutrition;

Scope of Work

The assignment is expected to be conducted from 6th June to 10th July. 24 health staff are targeted for this training.

The following are key deliverables expected of this assignment and within the specified period

· Initial inception report detailing the methodology to be used to train staff;

· Updated IYCF Training Package materials, including facilitation guides, power points presentations, handouts and evaluation formats;

· A detailed work plan;

· A full report of the training, lessons learned in process and follow up action plan;

Education, Skills and Experience Required

· Degree in nutrition, nursing, midwifery or public health. Additional qualifications including masters in nutrition and public health in nutrition are highly desirable;

· Certified IYCF trainer;

· At least 3 years’ experience in field work and coordination with national and international agencies and organization in the field of emergency nutrition intervention;

· Knowledge of main nutrition guidelines and practices is necessary (assessment, treatment, surveillance, monitoring and prevention), including the Somali nutrition guidelines ;

· Communication skills: Able to speak the local language (Somali), experience and the ability to write professional reports, the ability to deliver effective presentations;

· Training skills: the ability to transfer technical knowledge and skills;

· The consultant will work closely with ANPPCAN-SOM SHF project manager and district project coordinators
