Internews seeks to appoint a Media Trainer consultant (Migration project) based in Johannesburg South Africa

The position is situated within the Programs Department at Internews and reports to the Project Coordinator. The Media Trainer is responsible for facilitating training workshops for journalist and CSOs and contributing to the broader objectives of the organisation and project. This position is a fixed term, full time contract for 6 months.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities include the following, but not limited to below (other duties may be assigned)

  • Work closely with and support the Program Manager to plan and execute trainings and other relevant program activities – both offline and online
  • Research, design and produce training manuals and guides for SADC and SA journalist’s trainings on migration and xenophobia
  • Design mentoring schedules for trained SADC and SA journalists
  • Liaise with Internews resource partners to gather materials for trainings
  • Invite and source participants and resource persons for journalist’s trainings for SA and SADC journalist training workshops
  • Assist in administration work for training workshops.
  • Train and mentor journalist trainees in reporting on migration
  • Facilitate journalist and CSO joint roundtables
  • Monitoring and evaluation of training programmes
  • Track and record media published pieces
  • Travel for trainings and workshops related events as and when required

Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize efficiently
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment
  • Training, facilitation and mentoring skills
  • Ability to work in a team and in collaboration with different departments
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritise competing work demands
  • A keen interest and following in media developments on migration and journalism

Qualification and experience:

  • A relevant advanced degree in journalism, communication or Media Studies
  • Experience in facilitating workshops / trainings / webinars for journalists
  • Experience in working either with migrant rights, civil society, press freedom
  • Experience as a journalist/editor an added advantage
  • Media literacy related experience will be a big plus
  • Social media prowess

Production. To strengthen the independent media sector, Internews works with local media professionals to produce original programming. In 2008 this came to 8800 hours of television and radio programming.

Media infrastructure. Internews provides a broad range of infrastructure support to enable independent media to provide vital news and information, including providing journalists and stations with production equipment, creating production studios, and building radio stations from the ground up.

Media law and policy. To allow independent media to fulfill their “watchdog” function, Internews has worked for the adoption and implementation of fair media laws and policies in 21 countries.
