Greenpeace’s work in Africa focuses on addressing climate emergency and protecting bio-diversity, through broad campaigns promoting sustainable fishing in the oceans, protecting forests and forest peoples’ rights, ending fossil fuel and nuclear based power, promoting renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

About the Job

The People and Culture Director will be responsible for conceptualising, initiating, planning, directing, implementing and managing the staff and organisational development strategies of GPAF. This will involve various strategies related to HR systems, remuneration, job evaluation, learning, training and staff development, capacity building, retention, performance management, workforce and succession planning, organisational climate, diversity management and employment equity.

The role will be responsible for the efficient and effective Employee and Labour Relations services to all levels of staff; for managing the relationship with the staff/ workplace Forum as member of the negotiating team and for the development of all policy and strategy in this area.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Policy & Governance

  • Provide strategic leadership to the People and Culture function, aligning HR strategy with organisational objectives.

  • Develop, review and implement HR policies, procedures and systems across the full employee lifecycle.

  • Advise the Executive Director, SMT and Board on employee and labour relations, legal matters and organisational risk.

  • Ensure fair, competitive conditions of service and effective disciplinary and dispute resolution processes.

  • Maintain strong governance, compliance and internal control frameworks.

Leadership & Operational Management

  • Lead and manage the People and Culture team to ensure high performance and effective service delivery.

  • Oversee workforce capability, HR systems and process optimisation.

  • Provide day-to-day guidance to management and staff on HR, discipline and grievance matters.

  • Stay abreast of legislative and HR developments to inform organisational practice.

Stakeholder & Union Engagement

  • Serve as part of the negotiating team in engagements with unions and staff forums.

  • Lead consultations on restructuring, performance management and related organisational processes.

  • Build strong relationships with internal leadership and external legal and professional partners.

Risk & Financial Oversight

  • Manage HR-related risk and ensure compliance with statutory and governance requirements.

  • Oversee the Unit’s operational budget and related financial controls.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Human Resources Management, Industrial psychology, Organisation Development or related field.

  • Excellent knowledge of employment legislation and regulations across Africa

  • Negotiations and Consultation

  • Conflict management and resolution skills

  • Policy design and formulation

  • Spoken and written French an advantage

  • No criminal record other than related to activist activities.

  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams across geographies and cultures.

  • Preferred: At least 10 years’ of HR experience working across the full HR value chain within NGOs, international organizations, or movements, with a minimum of 5 years in HR department leadership roles.
