Title: Project Driver

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Contract: 20 months fixed terms contract

Salary: Local Terms and Conditions apply

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of individuals using the vehicle, with extra care and caution when handling children
  • Perform short-distance errands and long-distance trips
  • Follow up on driver planning and scheduling using the project calendar and register transportation requests
  • Deliver correspondence to project partners as required
  • Facilitate pick-ups for project visitors and provide transportation during official visits
  • Monitor vehicle mileage use and ensure routine and regular service and maintenance are carried out within required run-times
  • Schedule periodical vehicle examinations for service
  • Apply for the renewal of the vehicle license
  • Determine when and what kind of maintenance the vehicle needs, and keep track of general maintenance schedules, especially car tyre condition
  • Ensure the sound running of the assigned vehicles and arrange minor repairs where necessary
  • Check oil and tyres properly and keep the service vehicles clean, both inside and outside
  • Keep track of timely car insurance renewals
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and attend to any noted faults and defects
  • Update monthly mileage records
  • Maintain a logbook of each service vehicle on a daily basis
  • Keep the assigned vehicle(s) in good running condition and perform routine daily checks (check oil, water, battery, brakes, tyres, etc.)

This is a highly varied and involved role and the above is not an exhaustive list of duties or required professional skills.

Jobholder Requirements

Essential:

  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a driver’s test.
  • Ability to complete and pass an eye test.
  • Proven experience in driving safely within the laws of (Kenya) and with respect for other road users and pedestrians.
  • Experience in acting as a driver for staff to carry out official duties.
  • Ability to pick up Sightsavers staff to and from the airport where this service is not outsourced.
  • Experience in driving vehicles for official errands.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of keeping vehicles equipped with reflectors, fire extinguishers, first aid boxes, etc., and ensuring first aid boxes are regularly checked and replenished.
  • Experience in test driving vehicles once a week to ensure they are in good condition.
  • Ability to perform other clerical duties as required to support the efficient operation of the office.

In its 65 year history, Sightsavers has distributed treatment to protect more than 295 million people against river blindness (onchocerciasis), carried out 6.1 million sight-restoring cataract operations and treated 43 million people with antibiotics to combat the potentially blinding infection trachoma.
