About the Burkina Faso and Niger programmes:

MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury. The main area of focus in MAG’s programmes across West Africa is Arms Management and Destruction (AMD) work, working with national defence and security authorities towards the safe storage management as well as destruction of weapons and munitions. Our AMD operations are focused on armoury construction, design and management, weapons marking and management, assessment of needs and bulk demolitions.

About the role:

Reporting to the Regional Director, you will be responsible for the delivery, effective management, monitoring and evaluation of projects within Burkina Faso and Niger. You will have a wide variety of strategic responsibilities including contract management, donor liaison, business development, people management, security management, capacity building and risk management. This senior role will provide you with the opportunity to use your people management skills, leading a diverse team of international and national staff operating across a geographically varied environment. You will also have the opportunity to use your skills in business development and stakeholder management, to take a leading role in donor development, identifying funding opportunities in a demanding donor environment, and working with a wide range of national and international actors.

About you:

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of strategically managing and directing large scale projects including, implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation, risk assessment and mitigation and contract compliance. Experience of working overseas at a senior management level is essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important for this role as you will need to build effective relationships and develop networks with all local and regional stakeholders.

Fluency in French and English is essential.

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a non-governmental organization that assists people affected by landmines, unexploded ordnance, and small arms and light weapons.

MAG takes a humanitarian approach to landmine action. They focus on the impact of their work on local communities. This approach recognises that although the number of landmines in an area may be small, the effect on a community can be crippling. Targets are therefore determined locally, in response to liaison with affected communities, and local authorities.MAG field operations are managed and implemented by nationals of the affected countries, with MAG expatriate staff taking a monitoring and training role. MAG provides work for many members of affected communities, with families of landmine victims taking an active role.MAG is based in Manchester, United Kingdom, and has a sister organisation, MAG America in Washington, D.C., United States. As part of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, MAG was co-laureate of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.
