NRT is made up of 26 community conservancies in Northern Kenya, and was established by the communities to better manage their natural resources. The Trust empowers these communities to be self-sufficient and well governed, helping them to manage livestock grazing in harmony with wildlife and to diversify their livelihoods through tourism and other enterprises.

NRT's mission is to develop resilient community conservancies which transform people’s lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources.

General Information
The conservancies that make up the Northern Rangelands Trust cover more than 25,000 square kilometers between them, in the areas of Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo, Marsabit, Baringo, East Pokot, Tana River and Ijara.Communities in these semi-arid and arid districts have always relied heavily on income from their cattle, putting increased pressure on the land and wildlife, resulting in degradation of the rangelands. Northern Kenya is also home to several endangered species including Grevy's zebra, African wild dog, the hirola antelope and many elephants, all of whom come into conflict with livestock owners. The future of wildlife in Northern Kenya depends on a harmony with the people that share their land. Yet it is difficult for such remote communities to access expertise and funding to better manage their land and livestock. NRT acts as a support network, giving them the contacts, training and advice they need to restore their land and build more resilient lives.
