Terre des Hommes Netherlands is looking for a Finance Consultant, full time, to be based in Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel in the country. This consultancy is open to applicants who can prove the right to live and work in Kenya. Contract: 3 months.

Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL) prevents child exploitation in developing countries, rescues children from exploitative situations and ensures that these children can continue their development in a safe environment. Terre des Hommes is a rights based organisation. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the cornerstone of all our programmes.

What we do

Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses its long-term development work on (Worst Forms of) Child Labour, Child Migration and Child Trafficking, (Commercial) Sexual Exploitation of Children and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Children (including Child Abuse and Child Marriage) and on Child Protection in Humanitarian Crisis. For each of these forms of child exploitation, Terre des Hommes Netherlands develops and implements programmes, through local partners in twenty countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Our approach

Terre des Hommes Netherlands addresses the above mentioned issues through five types of interventions: prevention of the worst forms of child exploitation, prosecution of those who perpetrate crimes against children, promotion of a safe and conducive social/economic/legal context for children, provision of services to ensure safe and enduring reintegration of child victims; and partnership & participation to strengthen civil society in the promotion of children’s rights and include meaningful participation of children.

Position within the organisation

The Finance Consultant works with the Country Team (CT) for Kenya, and receives hierarchical leadership from the Finance and Admin Officer to whom he/she reports. He/she will, in close collaboration and consultation with the country team , advise and act on the development, implementation and monitoring of the various projects under the child protection programme in Kenya. This will be done in close collaboration with, and support to, the project partners in Kenya.

Main Deliverables:

  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports of self implemented and co-implemented projects
  • Review of cash request/advances requests submitted by Kenya team against budgets.
  • Review of staff imprest declarations ensuring settlement in time and as per approved budget.
  • Preparation of books of account for audit, for self implemented and co-implemented projects.
  • Review of Project budgets, proposal and budget projections to ensure they are done as per Terre des Hommes Netherlands guidelines and reflect the value for money principle.
  • Filing of all supporting documents for administration and projects and ensuring the filing system of the organization is in order
  • Assist in project and country office logistics i.e travel arrangements
  • Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
  • Assist in the procurement process as per the Kenya team needs.
  • Process the procurement for 2019 operational/statutory audits ensuring all engagement letters are signed before the end of December 2019 and that all reports are finalised by 15th February 2020.
  • Assist with the project closure process for year 2019.
  • Attend monthly and quarterly review meetings and present BvAs for Kenya Country Office budgets.

Knowledge and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance, economics, accounting or any other relevant degree.
  • Relevant professional qualification ie ACCA/CPA is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of MS Excel/Google sheet is essential.
  • Previous experience working in INGO setting
  • Experience in grants management is an added advantage.

Terre des hommes, also Terre des Hommes (Land of People, literally, Land of Men) is an international children's rights charitable humanitarian umbrella organization under the aegis of the International Federation of Terre des Hommes (TDHIF), with independent organizations in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Syria. It was founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne, Switzerland.
