Overview of position

  • Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, Head of Office, Project Manager & direct supervision of the National Migration Health Officer, the incumbent will support neonatal emergency health service delivery & deployment of all innovation Norway neonatal project in coordination with the Principal Medical officer (PMO) of the hospital, the Emergency Response Coordinator in the LGA & the Head of Sub Office (HoSO) in Maiduguri. S / He shall coordinate specialized care for patients with neonatal critical illnesses. S / he shall provide leadership & guidance in establishing the highest standards of care & ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices S / he will undertake the below tasks as mentioned in this TOR.

Role objectives

Clinical:

  • Responsible for facilitating referrals from the IDP camps & host community via the (Neo Tricycle) ambulance(s) to the pediatric neo room for proper management of neonates.
  • Responsible for the clinical nursing care of critically ill neonates admitted to neo room / SCBU according to generally accepted standards.
  • Provide basic & advanced neonatal & pediatric life support (certification & abilities).
  • Provide advanced mechanical ventilation & high frequency oscillatory ventilation management.
  • Maintain detailed reports on each child & report on their progress.
  • Manage critical & emergency cases, then refer complicated cases to other specialists the patient might be seeing.
  • Dispense & administer medications that are compatible with other medicines the patient is taking.
  • Advice patient’s parents / guardians on any alternative treatment they might be seeking.
  • Help the patient to fully recover from their illness & have the patient follow up even after they are okay as post recovery treatment is considered important.
  • Communicate & cooperate with other colleagues who wish to discuss other pertinent medical problems regarding neonates in other areas of the hospital.
  • Observe & stay up to date with the laws & statutory codes of medical practice.

Administrative:

  • Participate in the design & formulation of unit policies, SOPs & clinical pathways.
  • Performing other applicable tasks & duties as assigned by the Chief Migration Health Officer / National Migration Health Officer & PMO.
  • Abide by the hospital rules, protocols & standard practices.

Project reporting

  • This role will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, Head of Office, Project Manager & direct supervision of the National Migration Health Officer.

Key competencies

  • University degree nursing with pediatric sub specialty or a minimum of diploma in clinical nursing (registered nurse with pediatric posting) from an accredited academic institution with at least a minimum of three years (three years for Bachelor’s degree holders) of continuous practice post graduation, registered to practice in Nigeria & with a valid registration license or a minimum of 5 years for a diploma holder (registered nurse).
  • Has hands on experience in the management of various neonatal & pediatric critical care patients, including trauma intensive care, respiratory therapy, ICU / SCBU, nutrition, infectious disease & pulmonary hypertension ICU management.
  • Possess general medical knowledge & an understanding of how treatments affect different developmental growth stages.
  • Should be updated on the latest breakthroughs in the field of neonatology & pediatrics.
  • Is conversant with the norms, culture & religion of the people & can adapt easily, preferably some from that region. Given the stressful nature of Borno’s security situation, which remains fluid & unpredictable & its high interpersonal & communication skills demands, the nurse will need to be able to fit easily into a complex & highly operative team of various cultural backgrounds.
  • Previous work experience with the UN, international organizations & companies would be an advantage preferably within the United Nations or the international humanitarian sector.
  • Training & experience in pediatric emergencies, SCBU / IUC, first aid & emergency health will be an added advantage.
  • Good computer literacy & demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word & SharePoint.
  • Attention to detail & accuracy in handling & reporting data.
  • Flexible work schedule & be ready to be engaged on short notice.
  • Proven ability to establish & maintain strong working relations with relevant government counterparts, international organizations & private sector entities.
  • Fluency in English language is required (oral & written) & working knowledge of the local language like Hausa & Kanuri is an advantage.
