Water, Sanitation, Health Technical Expert 59 views0 applications

Concern Worldwide has been operational in South Sudan since 1985, making it one of the first humanitarian organisations with a consistent presence in the country, including during the civil war. Since South Sudan’s independence in 2011, Concern has maintained an active role in addressing the country’s ongoing humanitarian challenges through emergency relief, recovery, and long-term development programmes.

Concern’s interventions focus on serving the most vulnerable, hard-to-reach, and underserved populations. Our current sectoral work includes Health and Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Food Security and Livelihoods, and Emergency Response. We operate in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Western Bahr El Ghazal, and Unity States and are active members of national and state-level Health, Nutrition, and WASH clusters, working closely with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other key stakeholders.

In Unity State, Concern is a leading WASH agency, providing access to clean water, improving sanitation services, and preventing the spread of waterborne diseases. Our work includes managing major water systems, operating Surface Water Treatment Systems (SWAT) in flood-displaced sites, and integrating hygiene promotion with health and nutrition services. Concern also holds a leadership role as WASH Cluster Coordinator in the state.

Concern Worldwide is seeking a WASH Expert for a two-month consultancy to provide technical support to its WASH programme in Unity State. The consultant will play a key role in overseeing ongoing activities, monitoring grant progress, and building the capacity of local WASH staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and support in the implementation of ongoing WASH activities.
  • Conduct on-the-job training to strengthen the technical skills of the WASH Officer.
  • Monitor grant progress and ensure timely implementation of activities, particularly those nearing completion.
  • Build staff capacity on:
    • Technical reporting
    • Budget monitoring
    • Contractor engagement and oversight
    • Work monitoring and documentation
    • Issuance of completion certificates
    • Coordination with government entities and other stakeholders
  • Support improved coordination with the Ministry of Health and other WASH partners.
  • Ensure integration of hygiene promotion with health and nutrition programming.

How to apply

A technical offer with:

  • An updated curriculum vitae (CV)

A financial offer with:

  • Costs in Euros for the consultancy including any other costs associated with this

The documents should be sent to Susan Finucane, Desk Officer for Concern South Sudan at [email protected] on or before COB Tuesday 29th July.

Concern Worldwide works with the world's poorest people to transform their lives.

We are an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and suffering in the world’s poorest countries.

We work in partnership with the very poorest people in these countries, directly enabling them to improve their lives, as well as using our knowledge and experience to influence decisions made at a local, national and international level that can significantly reduce extreme poverty. In 2015, we positively impacted the lives of 22.5 million people.

For more than 45 years, Concern has been dedicated to reducing suffering and fighting hunger and poverty. Today, Concern’s work is needed more than ever.

John and Kay O'Loughlin with President Mary McAleese on the 40th anniversary of Concern's foundation.

Concern was founded by John and Kay O’Loughlin-Kennedy in 1968, as a response to the famine in the Nigerian province of Biafra. The famine was largely precipitated by the conflict that followed Biafra’s attempt to secede from Nigeria.

John’s brother, Father Raymond Kennedy, a Holy Ghost Priest, had returned to Ireland from Nigeria with news about the plight of people in Biafra where widespread famine was becoming a reality due to the Nigerian blockade of food, medicines, fuel and basic necessities.

John, Kay and Raymond held a press conference in the Shelbourne Hotel to raise awareness and funds. This allowed them send the first ‘mercy flight’ to Biafra.

But much more was needed,  some weeks later a larger meeting was called in the home of John and Kay, Africa Concern was formed and the fundraising continued.

Send One Ship

Africa Concern with the Knights of Columbanus launched an appeal in June 1968 for the famine in Biafra with the slogan "Send One Ship".

Becoming Concern

On 29 September, a 600 tonne ship named the Columcille arrived at Sao Tome, a Portuguese island off the coast of Biafra, filled with vital supplies of powdered food, medicines, and batteries. In 1970, a huge cyclone hit East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the public were asked to respond. Africa Concern simply became Concern.
