Job Title: Watsan Technician

Location: Ganjuwa, Bauchi
Employment Type: Full-time

Main Purpose

  • Supporting the Watsan Supervisor in the implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Water Hygiene Sanitation activities and infrastructure in the project according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population.

Job Description

  • Carrying out tasks directly related to the Watsan activities, such as construction and maintenance of infrastructures in the project according to MSF protocols and standards concerning the operation of water supply, waste management and excreta disposal, hygiene and infection control.
  • Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of the Watsan structures and, when applicable, of the medical facilities;
  • Identifying, recruiting, training and supervising daily labourers or hygiene agents for Watsan activities
  • Informing the Watsan Supervisor of any difficulties, anomalies and problems that may affect the normal functioning of activities and tasks in his/her area of responsibility;
  • Assisting the Watsan Supervisor in Watsan data collection and reporting, as well as maintaining updated files and records of assigned project activities
  • Being responsible for equipment, tools, and consumables, verifying that they are safely used safely and maintained. Reporting to the supervisor any need for renewal and the weekly/monthly consumption
  • To plan with the EH Supervisor on daily needs in the Community, ATFCs and ICCM sites.
  • To ensure he/she follows the checklist on the needs in the ATFCs and ICCM sites before the working days.
  • Ensure water availability in ATFCs and ICCM sites and that backup storage is available.
  • Ensure the Cleaners follow the IPC protocol in carrying out their duties in the outreach centres.
  • Ensure Vector control strategies are put in place in all the ATFCs, ICCMs, stores and facilities.
  • Plan with the EH Supervisor to ensure that waste management is improved in all outreach sites
  • To ensure the maintenance calendar for boreholes, motor pumps, generators, and other equipment is followed according to the working hours following the maintenance calendar.
  • Be prepared to respond to environmental health emergencies such as waterborne disease outbreaks, population displacements or plumbing failures and take appropriate actions to mitigate the risks.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties that may involve lifting or manual labour.
  • Repair or replace faulty plumbing components as needed to prevent disruptions in water supply and maintain sanitation.
  • Provide Support and Trainings if needed on ‘Outreach activities’: Chlorination, Environmental Decontamination, Burials etc
  • Any other Task assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

  • Diploma or technical certification in water and sanitation or related studies is essential.
  • Previous experience in technical works, borehole maintenance, batch chlorination, community activities and plumbing is required.
  • Languages: English and Hausa language are essential
  • Knowledge: Computer literacy is essential

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
