NRC is seeking to engage a Regional Consultant, Psychosocial Support (PSS) in Education to provides overall technical guidance and support to NRC in the Central West Africa (CWA) region, within the thematic area of Psychosocial Support (PSS) and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
Globally, NRC provides opportunities for school-aged children (ages 6-18) to complete a full cycle of basic education, targeting children who are out of school or have had their education interrupted. Within this programming, the implementation of Safe and Inclusive Learning principles, in line with NRC’s Child Safeguarding policy, is critical. It is widely recognised that a feeling of safety and wellbeing is a precondition for learning; one way in which this is achieved is by providing psychosocial support (PSS) to displacement-affected children through NRC’s flagship Better Learning Programme (BLP).
BLP programming is intended to support children’s recovery from the traumatic events experienced during crisis through a classroom-based PSS approach. This approach is based on NRC’s five principles for recovery – safety, calming, connectedness, empowerment, and hope. Phase one of BLP introduces these five principles to students by enhancing the capacity of teachers, education personnel and caregivers to provide children with practical knowledge and skills to manage their stress and improve their overall wellbeing though a series of mindfulness activities and deep breathing and stretching exercises.
BLP was introduced in Palestine in 2012, and over the last 7 years, it has been successfully scaled up and mainstreamed in UNRWA while an institutionalisation plan was put place to mainstream BLP in and Ministry of Education schools. Based on the strong results in Palestine, and the high demand for PSS programming in the region, BLP is the process of being mainstreamed in Lebanon and Jordan and was introduced in all other NRC Middle East programs, including Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Libya. BLP has also been implemented in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Afghanistan, and has recently been piloted in Kenya.
NRC will support children affected by COVID-19 with activities from phase one of the Better Learning Programme (BLP 1), helping provide them with a sense of normalcy after experiencing collective traumatic events, and giving them tools to better manage the stress of the pandemic.
The consultant will coordinate the new global grant at the regional level, focused on capacity building on and roll-out of NRC’s flagship PSS response, the Better Learning Program (BLP). The grant specifically aims at ensuring continuation of the provision of psycho-social support in education during COVID-19 times. In close coordination and cooperation with NRC country offices and HQ, she/he will lead on BLP’s contextualization for the region, organizational and staff’s capacity development, and planning and implementation of roll-out of BLP in the region.
