About MAG

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

MAG is in the process of establishing country offices and operations in Kenya and Tanzania, which will be managed as a joint programme from a main office in Nairobi. Operations will be focused on weapons and ammunition management activities, and will work in partnership with state security actors in each location assisted by a small programme support team.

About the role

Reporting to the Technical Lead, the Construction Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of MAG’s project aimed at the rehabilitation and construction of storage areas. They will be responsible for the design and execution of the entirety of the project, including the coordination of logistics and procurement and conducting quality assessments to ensure successful delivery of project objectives.

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience of working in construction activities, with previous experience of managing tender processes, managing third party contractors and ensuring quality delivery of work,
  • Have a university degree in Construction Engineering,
  • Possess substantial knowledge of the development of bills of quantities, and specifications,
  • Have good literacy, numeracy and IT skills including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of NGOs and show a commitment to humanitarian work,
  • Be self-organized, strong attention to detail, team player, and able to work under limited supervision,
  • Have ability to meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure,
  • Possess ability to think on feet and show shrewd judgement promptly and positively in difficult situations,
  • Have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills,
  • Fluency in English language is essential,
  • Supervisory skills and demonstrated ability to motivate and manage a small team would be an advantage.

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a non-governmental organization that assists people affected by landmines, unexploded ordnance, and small arms and light weapons.

MAG takes a humanitarian approach to landmine action. They focus on the impact of their work on local communities. This approach recognises that although the number of landmines in an area may be small, the effect on a community can be crippling. Targets are therefore determined locally, in response to liaison with affected communities, and local authorities.MAG field operations are managed and implemented by nationals of the affected countries, with MAG expatriate staff taking a monitoring and training role.
