Overview of Position

Support implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in our clients country operations per corporate commitments in their environmental policy &d accompanying Environmental and Social Sustainability Framework (ESSF). These efforts support our client to systematically measure, manage & report on their environmental risks & reduce operating costs by enabling cost effective environmental actions in their facilities & operations & also contribute to the UN & our clients commitments to the strategy for sustainability management in the United Nations (UN) system, 2020 – 2030 phase 1.

Role Objectives

  • Lead In the roll out of our clients Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in their country operations following corporate commitments in their environmental policy & accompanying environmental & social sustainability framework of reduction of its carbon & environmental footprint.
  • Conduct assessment in the country office (Julie area) & the field offices (15 locations) & proposing / follow up for Implementation of tailored initiatives to environmental, safeguarding & Initiatives citing the poor infrastructure & limited resources available in the remote locations.
  • Collaborate with other UN agencies on the environmental initiatives through OMT, taking the lead in exploring areas of such collaboration & ensuring that all key stakeholders internally & management are consulted / involved & required scope of EMS is captured.
  • Follow up & scale up already established waste management initiatives in field offices & initiate good waste management practices including environmental awareness training for staff, environmental focal points & partners.
  • Provide technical guidance & support to other functional units, not limited to programs, logistics & engineering & identifying areas of improvement / areas of initiatives, in review of the country office planned activities in both the country office & remote areas.
  • Build the capacity of the management services staff by guiding, coaching & mentoring on EMS framework & required action plans / assessments & environmental matrixes.

Oversees the overall execution, mission & efficacy of the 7 thematic areas in regard to environmental sustainability program / projects as detailed below:

  • Energy: Conduct assessments & recommend context specific, practical energy efficient initiatives in country operation.
  • Waste: Support the scale up of waste management initiatives in our clients field offices targeting waste reduction, recycling, reuse & recovery where possible.
  • Water: Support the rollout of water conservation & reuse initiatives within our clients operations areas.
  • Wastewater: Support wastewater management reuse / recycling initiative & monitoring within our clients operation areas.
  • Sustainable procurement: Support procurement / logistic unit with guidelines & measures to mainstream sustainability on goods & services.
  • Use of hazardous substances: Conduct assessment, provide guidelines & a roadmap of how to reduce greenhouse gases & environmental footprint within our clients operations.
  • Environmental training /awareness: Conduct regular & adhoc environmental awareness using the best communication channel on environmental sustainability & practices.

Project Reporting

  • This role reports to the line manager.

Key Competencies

  • University qualification in, environmental management, environmental engineering, environmental science, geography, natural resource management or related subject is required.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management rotes is required, experience should span at least three disciplines from this list environmental management systems, energy / GHG management, water management, waste management, air pollution; environmental compliance, environmental impact assessment & corporate sustainability reporting.
  • Proven professional experience in implementing environmental management systems according to international standards (ISO 14001, EMAS, GRI or similar) is required.
  • Membership in a competency based environmental professional body (Chartered Environmental, Certified Environmental Professional, Registered Environmental Impact Assessment & Environmental Auditor (EIA / EA) or similar) will be highly regarded.
  • Ability to work independently under consultative direction, as well as to manage & provide effective technical direction to other team members.
  • Ability to expertly write & translate complex concepts for a variety of audiences, with the ability to facilitate training workshops / meetings & write publishable reports.
  • Proven ability to coordinate & effectively communicate across multiple units & departments (including headquarters, regional & country office levels).
  • Proven ability to successfully operate within the different geographic & cultural contexts in which our clients operates.
  • Proficiency in MS Office & other relevant software literacy.
