GIZ- SDR Programme 

Background

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives; and in Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors.

The Strengthening Drought Resilience (SDR) support Programme of GIZ was initiated in 2013 as a response to the Ethiopian Government’s appeal to end drought emergencies. Thus, SDR Program is closely linked to the Country Programming Paper (CPP) to End Drought Emergencies in the Horn of Africa and anchored in the over-arching Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP). This programme is implemented under the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources (MoALR), the respective decentralised bureaus and the GIZ.

The SDR-Programme of GIZ supports the Ethiopian government’s endeavours to strengthen the drought resilience capacity of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in selected pilot areas in Afar and Somali regions, by allowing them to adapt their livelihood system to a changing natural and socio-economic environment context in order to get a higher and more secured income.

For its SDR program activities, GIZ is looking, for an Intern as per the detail below:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a Knowledge Management Repository and Inventory System (KMRI) for the Strengthening Drought Resilience in Arid and Semiarid Lowlands Program (SDR-ASAL) of GIZ.
  • Integrate the KMRI into the structure of the Data Management System (DMS) of SDR-ASAL.
  • Implement the KMRI ready-to-use for SDR-ASAL staff.

Tasks

Support the knowledge management team

The intern

  • In cooperation with the knowledge management team and project managers of SDR-ASAL and the regional offices in Afar and Somali region:
  • Familiarize with the existing preliminary structure of the KMRI and with the current DMS system in use by project managers and staff.
  • Identify the existing type of KM materials which is in use by SDR-ASAL such as publications, papers, presentations, information material, brochures, posters, manuals and reports.
  • Identify the necessary folders and finalize the existing preliminary structure.
  • Define user groups with different levels of access rights.
  • Implement a pilot system in DMS with a complete folder structure and defined access rights for different levels of user groups.
  • Test the pilot system with pilot material and pilot users.
  • Implement feed-back after testing phase.
  • Transfer update versions of all SDR-ASAL KM material to the folders of KMRI.
  • Present the final structure to the KM team and the other staff.
  • Define a link to the KMRI structure of the Green Pillar sector of GIZ Ethiopia.
  • Deliver a manual on how to maintain the KMRI continuously (up to 20 pages).

Job Requirements

Required qualifications, competences and experiences

 

Qualification

  • Sc. in the field of communication, data management or related fields.

Professional experience

  • Initial experience in the area of document management.

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Excellent communication skills orally and written in English language.
  • Good analytic and organizing skills.
  • Sense for continuous quality improvement.
  • Team working capacities.
  • High degree of initiative and creativeness.
  • Good computer skills, esp. Microsoft Office.
  • Very good attention to detail.
  • Basic writing and speaking skills in German is a pro.
  • Very high capacity of team work with internal staff members also in the regional offices.
