Program Summary:

This project will impact “significantly measurable” learning outcomes that enable beneficiaries to continue their educational pursuits. That may mean transition into the appropriate grade level of upper-primary/lower-secondary school, or pursuit of technical/vocational skills training.

Position Summary:

The Professional Development Specialist will support the design and implementation of the teacher training and teacher mentoring, coaching and supervision plans to be implemented. This Specialist is required to undertake a collaborative and capacity building approach with partners and engaged stakeholders to result in an approved framework and program.

Reporting and Supervision:

The Professional Development Specialist will report to the Reading/Education Advisor.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, development and implementation of the Teacher Professional Development Plan;
  • Ensure equity and inclusion within the growing national teaching force throughout South Sudan;
  • Develop performance requirements in Alternative Education Plan (AEP) teacher candidates;
  • Determine competency measures, assessments and examinations for AEP teacher candidates;
  • Develop systems to track teacher professional development entry, progress vs. benchmarks and exit;
  • Carry out related monitoring and evaluation activities;
  • Conduct on-the job working sessions for teachers participating in professional development;
  • Promote and build capacity of private networks to adopt the AEP training for their teachers;
  • Create a shared vision and capacity to invest in AEP solutions;
  • Establish support systems for AEP teachers, including teacher learning circles;
  • Support validation workshops and capacity building activities of Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program and associated materials with the Ministries of Education;
  • Ensure gender equity is included throughout the TPD Plan and professional development certification systems;
  • Ensure inclusivity and promote teacher well-being, conflict mitigation, and peacebuilding initiatives throughout all professional development activities and strategies implemented; and
  • Design and implement procedures and systems for coaching and mentoring.

    Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Requires a master’s degree in education or related field or a bachelor’s degree with 12 years of experience;
  • At least eight (8) years of experience in the education sector, with at least four (4) years of teaching experience preferred;
  • Experience with teacher training policy and practice, designing programs for data collection and analysis, and personnel management.
  • The candidate must demonstrate at least four (4) years of relevant technical experience working with activities that are of a similar scope to this activity;
  • At least five (5) years’ technical experience to support developing and implementing teacher professional development monitoring and evaluation plans;
  • Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills;
  • Must be able to demonstrate leadership and team-building skills;
  • Must be able to engage positively and productively with a diverse population of team members, stakeholder and government counterparts;
  • Professional proficiency and fluency in written and spoken English; and
  • Experience working on donor funded projects.
