Established in 1991, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) is the first non-governmental human rights organization working on the promotion and protection of human rights in Ethiopia. Job Description

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of EHRCO’s varied program of projects and interventions. Whilst some of these are long-term, others require flexibility and speed to respond to short-term developing situations. As such, the individual must be able to work independently and will have strong administrative and project management skills to support the activities of EHRCO’s Executive Director, as well as the delivery of programs by its wider membership. Experience of the international human rights or international development sector is essential. Knowledge of human rights law or advocacy is highly desirable since the successful applicant may use and rely on that knowledge to further EHRCO’s mission and build on its expanding body of work. Experience in fundraising is essential since the role involves relationship-building and applications with present and potential funders. The Program Coordinator must have strong communication skills, ensuring effective dissemination of EHRCO’s publications, including drafting newsletters, press releases, social media and web content, as well as professional interpersonal skills. The Program Coordinator is the first point of contact for EHRCO members, donors, partner organizations and supporters and also has the responsibility to develop proposal.

Duties and Responsibility

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for the following tasks.

  • Ensure overall operational management of the projects and delivery of results in accordance with the project documents and work plans; and other joint agreements between EHRCO and project partners;
  • Creating a project schedule and proposal, with milestones, due date and estimates those material that are required.
  • Ensure timely preparation, update and implementation of annual and detailed implementation work plans, and other related documents for timely commencement and implementation of the project activities;
  • Provide substantive input to the project activities, ultimate in-project quality assurance for achieving the overall project outputs, ensure timely implementation of project activities, including reporting on progress vis-à-vis planned activities and expected outputs;
  • Act as a principal representative of the project during assurance review meetings, evaluations and in discussions and, hence, be responsible for preparation of review and evaluation reports such as the Mid-Term and Annual Project Report (APR)
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of EHRCO team members, experts and consultants, including the preparation of the terms of reference, facilitation of recruitment, forward planning of project activities and budget expenditures, activity scheduling, monitoring of work/results and reporting;
  • Represent the project during the public events, PR and media activities, ensure the proper communication of project results through EHRCO communication channels; 
  • Ensure coordination with relevant departments, working groups and information on EHRCO activities are shared;
  • Facilitate in collection, analysis and interpretation of data in the field of implementation. Ensure availability of an up-to-date information on all critical issues related to EHRCO;
  • Ensure compliance with respective donor’s project management policies and procedures;
  • Guides any publications and Educational material development of the research section.
  • Assists in the preparation of regular and special reports, as well as investigations conducted by the organization.
  • Provide training for project related personnel.
  • Conduct need assessment (skill audit), establish recruitment scheme & build volunteers and interns’ database, record performance;
  • overseeing qualities of implementation processes, monitor, evaluate and sharing of leanings by using M&E requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum qualifications and experience:
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in political or social sciences, Law, international relations, development studies, public administration or related field;
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in component/project/program coordination, policy development and analysis, managing teams or project component;
  • Knowledge of civil society context and human rights situation in Ethiopia;
  • Experience of working with relevant stakeholders from the governmental and non-governmental institutions involved into civil society, democratization and human rights issues at the national level;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems;
  • Knowledge of effective participatory Monitoring, Evaluation and Research systems
  • Fluency in Amharic & English is required (both spoken and written);
  • Knowledge of other local language is an advantage
